Applications for the World Cinema Fund (WCF) Africa 2024 are open. The World Cinema Fund (WCF) Africa 2024 is now accepting applications for 40,000 Euros in funding. This program was established in 2016 to support films from sub-Saharan Africa, in collaboration with the German Federal Foreign Office.

In 2016, the World Cinema Fund opened up a specific funding opportunity for films from sub-Saharan Africa in collaboration with the German Federal Foreign Office. The WCF Africa program will automatically assess all requests for special financing that include initiatives from sub-Saharan Africa.

The WCF seeks to foster active collaboration between producers, directors, and German partners to assist motion pictures in the WCF regions and nations. German film studios thus have a significant cultural, political, and economic influence on the WCF’s organization.

  • Funding maximum: 40,000 euros for post-production expenses.
  • The projects that get support should have total manufacturing expenses that fall within the range of 200,000 to 1,400,000 euros.
  • The money has to go toward the film’s post-production in the previously stated areas.

Eligibility Criteria for World Cinema Fund (WCF) Africa 2024

Eligible to apply are:

Film production companies based in sub-Saharan Africa that can attest to their cooperation with a sub-Saharan African director; registered film production companies based in Germany (in the commercial register or registered trade) that can demonstrate a working relationship with a sub-Saharan African director; or registered film production companies from other EU member states, so long as they have a branch or place of business in Germany and can demonstrate a working relationship with a sub-Saharan African director.

Deadlines and Submission Form for World Cinema Fund (WCF) Africa 2024

Every year, there are two submission processes.

  • The initial submission procedure deadline is at the end of February or the start of March. Typically, decisions about these submissions are taken during jury meetings that take place towards the end of June or early July.
  • The second round of applications closes in July, and jury sessions to choose the best contributions typically take place in early November.

Following the corresponding jury meetings, decisions about funding recommendations are made public.

Application for World Cinema Fund (WCF) Africa 2024

The online submission form must have the following files (in either English or French) attached:

  • Financial details: The financing plan is provided in euros and, where applicable, the local currency. You may download a sample funding plan (16 KB) here. The names of the participating companies and partners, the manner of financing (funds, own investment, in-kind donations, sales/MG, etc.), and the percentage of each partner’s shares, broken down by country, must all be included in the financing plan. Additionally, please specify which amounts are still available and which have already been secured, along with when you expect a response or decision. The detailed budget is expressed in euros and, if possible, local currency.
  • Contracts and agreements: any verified funding contracts and/or letters of intent from financing partners.
  • Signed business papers, cooperation agreements, and co-production contracts.
  • Transfer of rights: A document or contract that formally gives the producer permission to use the screenplay for film production and transfers the screenwriter’s rights to the producer is known as a transfer of rights. Attaching the statement is not required if the author and producer are the same person.
  • An artistic/visual concept that includes a story premise, editing, casting, locales, mood board, and other elements.
  • A password-protected link to the rough cut that has either French or English subtitles (depending on which language was the original).
