The St Andrews Prize for the Environment, led by the University of St Andrews, is a global initiative that honors and supports innovative solutions to environmental challenges, including those related to the climate crisis.

The Prize, overseen by Professor Ineke De Moortel FRAS FRSE, Master of the United College, was established in 1998 to recognize significant contributions to environmental conservation. Initially partnered with ConocoPhillips, the University took full responsibility for the Prize in 2020.

St Andrews Prize for the Environment 2024

Over the years, the Prize has awarded more than US$2.5 million to individuals and organizations worldwide, supporting imaginative projects that protect the environment and promote sustainability.

With over 6,000 entries covering diverse areas such as human-animal conflict reduction, environmental justice, waste reduction, and urban regeneration, the Prize has recognized 25 winners and 60 runners-up, all receiving cash prizes to advance their initiatives.

Benefits of St Andrew Prize for the Environment 2024

  • The current Prize will give a $100,000 award to the winner and $25,000 to the runner-up.

Eligibility Criteria

To be able to apply for this, your:

  • Projects must be established with a proven track record of success.
  • They should relate to sustainable development or biodiversity and align with the UN Goals for Sustainable Development.
  • Projects should be replicable across different geographical areas and ideally scalable in size.
  • Clear need for funding and the ability to inspire others in the field.
  • Contribution to global sustainability goals in the short- to long-term.
  • High ethical standards regarding intellectual property, interactions with people, and environmental impact.
  • Inclusivity is essential.
